In the summer of 2008, between Emily’s junior and senior year in high school she was devoting her summer volunteering as a camp counselor for a summer camp she attended as a young child. For one week out of the summer the regular camp closes and opens to a group of children who are going through or have gone through cancer treatment. The regular counselors have that week off, however, as Emily said to me, “I don’t know why, but I feel like I am supposed to stay this week.” And that she did. Later in the week, I received a very emotional call from her as she was struggling with seeing the kids with all their health issues and she was in awe at just how happy and brave they all were. We spoke for a while and right before we ended the call she said, “oh, and by the way, I have a really sore throat.”
